Karoline Leavitt‘s Departure From the White House

1. When someone says she’s quitting to spend more time with their family, we should always interpret that to mean: “I got fired, but they’re letting me resign.” (Years ago, I put together a slide deck about this.) Leavitt’s departure may be the rare exception: She just had her second baby, and she’d need to be superwoman to be both the White House press secretary and a fully present mom.

2. With Leavitt’s résumé and strong support from Trump, finding a new job will be easy. That’s another exception: Many Trump officials have left the administration on bad terms — or at least on terms less rosy than those they arrived on. By contrast, Leavitt is setting her own date and departing with high praise from the president, the vice president, and several secretaries.

3. It’s interesting that she said she’ll remain an advocate for both MAGA and the GOP. She drew a distinction between the two. Which makes me wonder if she’ll follow another Trump press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and run for office (in Leavitt’s case, run again). After all, MAGA is unlikely to outlast Trump, and Leavitt isn’t yet 30; she’s thinking long term.
